Joseph Pilates put a strong emphasis on achieving abdominal control and connection in all his exercises, because it is essential for our posture, supporting the spine, and is a weak area for all of us. During this short mat class you will work into your deep abdominal muscles, not just your rectus (6 pack muscles). The deep muscles wrap around the abdomen from back to front a bit like a corset, and include the sides of the body and the pelvis. When we work to engage them we draw them IN AND UP, which sets the intra abdominal pressure and elongates the spine. Think about this when you are practice this class today and think about using controlled movements to really feel that Pilates burn.
